Your funded IVF cycle includes the following:

• Medical care: physician and nurse consultations, assessments and counselling

• Cycle monitoring: up to two attempts at cycle monitoring (bloodwork, urine tests, ultrasounds as required)

• Retrieval procedures: one egg retrieval, sperm collection including sperm thaw for donor sperm or frozen sperm

• Lab services: one round of embryology services to fertilize the eggs and culture the embryos including ICSI, assisted hatching and blastocyst culture

• Embryo care: freezing, thawing, and culture of embryos from that cycle

• Transfers: transfer of all viable embryos (one at a time) resulting from the start of the cycle

Funding through the Ontario Fertility Program (OFP) covers many of the main costs of IVF — including cycle monitoring, egg retrieval, and most laboratory services.

However, there are some expenses that are not covered under this program. These include:

• Fertility medications

• Additional testing (such as genetic testing, PGT-A, PGT-M)

• Storage fees for sperm, eggs, or embryos

• Shipping or transport fees

We recommend checking your employer benefits or private health insurance, as many plans offer coverage for fertility care and can help offset these additional costs.

You may also be eligible for the Ontario Fertility Treatment Tax Credit, a new refundable credit that builds on the existing Medical Expense Tax Credit. This credit covers 25% of eligible fertility-related expenses—up to $5,000 per year—and can include costs such as diagnostic testing, travel for treatment, fertility medications, and IVF-related expenses.

A Ministry of Health (MOH) Consent form will need to be signed and submitted for MOH approval as part of the process. Your care team will support you through this process.

The Government of Ontario provides funding for one IVF cycle per eligible person through the Ontario Fertility Program (OFP).

If you have already completed a funded IVF cycle in the past, you will not be eligible for another funded cycle under this program.

For same-sex female couples proceeding with reciprocal IVF, both patient and partner must be approved for funding at the same time.

The patient who will undergo the embryo transfer procedure will be the person who will be using the one funded IVF cycle for the couple under the OFP.

Unfortunately not. Funding for fertility preservation services like egg freezing and embryo freezing is only offered for select medical reasons, such as requiring chemotherapy for breast cancer treatment.

Yes. Patients can switch to another clinic even if they are currently on another clinic’s waitlist. If you have already signed a MOH funding agreement with that clinic but have not yet started treatment, you can retract your funding agreement and transfer to a different clinic.
